PennDOT reducing speeds on NEPA roadways

(WBRE/WYOU) — As a winter storm develops and moves into our area, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced they are placing speed restrictions on some Pennsylvania roads. PennDOT is urging drivers to avoid unnecessary travel, but if they have to head out, speeds will be reduced to 45 miles per hour on the following roadways: Interstate 80 between mile marker 192, Clinton / Union County line, and Interstate 180 at mile marker 212. Interstate 80 in Carbon and Monroe counties. The entire length of Interstate 180. Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County. Interstate 380 in Monroe County. On roads with speed restrictions, commercial vehicles not affected by the restrictions on the listed roads and other areas must move to the right lane.

Over 100 new winter coats, vests given away in Stroudsburg

STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A generous clothing distribution in the Poconos is helping those in need ahead of some winter weather. Franklin Clothing Outlet in Chambersburg donated their excess winter coats and vests on Tuesday to Pocono Mountains United Way. The coats were then given away to various charitable organizations in the Monroe County area including Street2Feet, Stroudsburg Wesleyan Church, and Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network. This initiative highlights the power of community partnerships and corporate giving.

ESU Bolsters Student Mental Health Resources with New Offerings

With a new semester underway, East Stroudsburg University’s Department of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) will add two new offerings to its range of resources designed to support students’ emotional well-being. TalkCampus – is a free peer-to-peer support network app where students can share their struggles safely and anonymously or confidentially with fellow students from around the world any time, day or night. The app also features a multi-language helpline staffed by trained mental health professionals. TELUS After Hours Crisis Support – offers free, confidential mental health counseling 24/7 via its mobile app or by phone at (877) 757-7587. Students can connect with a professional counselor via scheduled appointments, when an urgent need arises or any time they need to talk. Videos, articles and infographics on an array of wellness topics are also available.

Brown, Fritz: SCI Waymart’s Well-Being is Focus, Priority

HARRISBURG – Sen. Rosemary Brown (R-Lackawanna/Monroe/Wayne) and Rep. Jonathan Fritz (R-Susquehanna/Wayne) today issued the following statement regarding Gov. Josh Shapiro’s recent announcement to close additional prison facilities in the commonwealth: “Keeping SCI Waymart open has been a primary focus. As many of us recall, our facility was on the short list for closure consideration eight years ago. We fought and won that battle, and we are proud to say that we’ve done it again. Another round of closures has just been announced by Gov. Shapiro, and we want to reassure you that SCI Waymart is NOT on that list for proposed shuttering.

Stroudsburg Rifle sends three to states

On January 11, the Stroudsburg Rifle team took a trip to Southern Lehigh to take on the State Individual Qualifier. Five players shot top 25, and three made it to states.  Marksmen William Tonnies, ’25, Gavin Dunkelberger, ’25, Isabella Lisnik, ’25, Maxsim Lamberton, ’25, and Anthony Ortiz, ’26, all made the top 25 in the qualifiers.  Tonnies, Dunkelberger, and Lisnik were the highest placers, at seventh, eighth, and ninth places respectively. These three qualified for states and are traveling on Thursday to compete.

Furry Football Fun

The Puppy Bowl is back with an overload of cuteness and fun! This event showcases shelter pets nationwide playing “football”. This year it’s Team Ruff vs Team Fluff.  So, who won the Lombarky Trophy? USA Today reports that Team Fluff won.  The Underdog Award went to Mercury, and the Most Valuable Puppy Award went to Foxtrot. The puppies swapped the football for chew toys.

Coalition of Area Community Colleges and PASSHE Universities Benefits Students

Pennsylvania Community Colleges and the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) are advancing transfer partnership reforms that will make college more accessible and more affordable for Pennsylvania college students. With the support of Governor Josh Shapiro and a bipartisan coalition of state legislators, Act 69 of 2024 guarantees junior status for community college graduates at PASSHE institutions. The new transfer partnership was signed by presidents representing a strong regional effort in eastern Pennsylvania that encompasses Lehigh Carbon Community College, Northampton Community College and Luzerne County Community College, in partnership with Kutztown University, East Stroudsburg University and Commonwealth University.
