Bicyclist seriously injured after collision with car

CHESTNUTHILL TWP. MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A bicyclist is seriously injured after colliding with a car on Route 209, police stated. According to Pennsylvania State Police, on October 22 around 5:00 p.m., troopers were called to Route 209 in Chestnuthill Township for a crash involving a bike and an SUV. Fire officer found dead after volunteering at trunk-or-treat Police say the bicyclist made an "unsafe road crossing" and collided with the SUV. The bicyclist, a 21-year-old from Effort, sustained serious injury and was flown to Lehigh Valley Anderson. His current condition is unknown.

Pumpkin Palooza Contest

The Mountaineer Newspaper is hosting a Pumpkin Palooza Decorating contest for the SHS faculty and the voting is completely in the students’ control. Stroudsburg High School has always had an amazing fan base and a great student section. Man allegedly assaulted officers after ignoring roadblock

TANNERSVILLE, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man was arrested after police say he assaulted officers when he refused to stop for a roadblock due to a crash. According to the Pocono Township Police Department, on October 21 around 10:30 a.m., officers were on the scene of a crash and traffic was stopped in all directions. Police say a construction truck entered the intersection, ignoring orders to stop. The driver, Kyle Dale, 30, of Scranton, refused to stop, provide his driver's license, or get out of his vehicle, officers reported.

FBLA Region 21 Leadership Workshop Empowers Young Entrepreneurs at East Stroudsburg University

FBLAOn October 17, 2024, 79 students and 13 school advisors from 10 regional schools gathered at East Stroudsburg University for the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Region 21 Leadership Workshop, hosted by ESU’s Division of Economic Development and Entrepreneurship. The workshop provided aspiring young entrepreneurs with opportunities to develop their leadership skills, connect with business professionals, and showcase their innovative ideas. The event began with a networking breakfast sponsored by Lorna J. Hunter, Ph.D., vice president of enrollment management, setting the stage for a day of learning and inspiration. The students were welcomed by Dr. Hunter; Patrice Dume, director of the business accelerator and entrepreneurship; and Sylvester E. Williams, JD, dean of the College of Business and Management.

Diwali is now officially celebrated in Pennsylvania

Diwali is now an official holiday in Pennsylvania. On Monday, October 21, 2024, Governor Josh Shapiro signed Senate Bill 402 into law while attending a Diwali celebration. Diwali, known as the “Festival of Lights,” lasts five days with the main celebration occurring on the third day. This year, Diwali will be celebrated from October 29 to November 3. Diwali is one of the major religious festivals in Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, and some Buddhists. This festival generally symbolizes the “victory of light over darkness”, according to Britannica.

Volleyball wins first playoff game in school history

The Stroudsburg Mountaineers took down and swept the Pocono Mountain East Cardinals. They ended the game with East, 3-0. This was the first time the Mountaineers have won a district playoff game in school history. Stroudsburg took the lead in every set and left the Cardinals down by 5 the entire game. Every set was ended with ¨BANGERRRR¨, a statement made by Stroudsburg´s Coach Victor. The game was filled with thrilling plays, dime passes by Lara DeFreitas,’25, clean sets by Olivia Full, ’26, and smack down kills by Kornelia Wzsolek, ’25. Stroudsburg was also strong defensively with killer blocks by Madelyn Vargas, ’27. The Mountaineers are back in action on Thursday at Liberty for the semifinals in the district playoffs.
