Man arrested after allegedly kicking kittens, strangling victim

A New York man was arrested after police say he kicked kittens and strangled a victim during a domestic dispute.

According to the Pocono Township Police Dept., on April 28, officers responded to the Days Inn along Motor Lodge Road in Tannersville for a domestic dispute.

 

At the scene, the victim, who police said had visible injuries, said that 31-year-old Darrell Hubbard of Brooklyn, N.Y., kicked their kittens across the motel room, and punched and choked the victim before fleeing.

Officers said they were able to make contact with Hubbard, who was taken into custody and charged with strangulation, assault, and drug possession.

Hubbard was arraigned and given $10,000 secured bail.

Pocono Palace closing doors after over 45 years

MIDDLE SMITHFIELD TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A popular resort in the Poconos is closing its doors after more than 45 years.

Pocono Palace will be operating under new ownership.

It's best known for its cheesy romantic decor with heart-shaped tubs and a seven-foot-tall champagne tower.

The company owner of the hotel says in a press release it's embarking on a renovation journey.

Driver who fled multi-vehicle crash on I-80 apprehended

STROUD TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The driver of a tractor-trailer involved in a multi-vehicle crash that slowed traffic on Interstate 80 in the Poconos on Monday afternoon was taken into custody Tuesday.

According to police, the crash happened just after 1:30 p.m. near the Bartonsville Exit, causing a traffic backup for miles.

Wanted man charged with selling 50 bags of fentanyl, fleeing

Police say a tractor-trailer was involved in the crash and a state police helicopter had to be used to look for the driver, who fled the scene.

No one was seriously injured and the identity of the driver has not been released, and there's no word on if charges have been filed.

ESU to Confer 1,194 Degrees

A total of 1,194 students will receive degrees from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania during three commencement exercises on May 3 and May 4. Graduate students will be honored on Friday, May 3 at 6:45 p.m. and two ceremonies for undergraduate students will be held on Saturday, May 4.

The undergraduate ceremonies will take place at 8:45 a.m. (College of Health Sciences and College of Business and Management) and at 1:45 p.m. (College of Arts and Sciences and College of Education). All three ceremonies will be held in Koehler Fieldhouse.

Fall 2023 graduates, whose degrees were conferred in December, and August 2024 graduates, whose degrees will be conferred upon course completion this summer, are invited to participate in the ceremony and included in this list along with Spring 2024 graduates.

A total of 941 bachelor’s degrees, 237 master’s degrees and 16 doctoral degrees will be awarded.

ESU Women’s Rugby Places Fifth at National Tournament

East Stroudsburg University’s women’s rugby club team traveled to Boyds, Maryland to compete in the Collegiate Rugby National 7’s April 27-28.

The team beat Baldwin Wallace 22-15 in the first round before losing to Niagara 15-10 in the quarterfinals.

The loss dropped the Warriors down to a second bracket where they beat Missouri S&T, 22-10, and Siena, 22-0, to finish fifth.

Morgan Mattia, a senior majoring in biology from Morgantown, Pa., was named to the All-Tournament Team.
