POCONO TWP., MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Four men were arrested and one is still wanted after police say a basketball game led to a fight with gun threats in Monroe County last month. According to the Pocono Township Police Department, on July 8 around 7:00 p.m., officers were called to TLC Park basketball court for a report of 5-6 people fighting. Through further investigation, police said they learned a disagreement between eight men happened during a basketball game that led to a fight. Witnesses on the scene said that a man, later identified as Ethan Mercado, 20, of Tobyhanna, took out a gun and pointed it at several people on the court, officers stated.

EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Two people have been arrested after an undercover investigation resulted in a motel drug operation being shut down. According to the Stroud Area Regional Police Department, on August 27 around 3:00 p.m., Sean Johnson, 50, and Cathi Jones, 52, were captured in Alabama after a warrant was issued for their arrest in Monroe County. Between May and June of 2023, Monroe County detectives say they, along with the FBI, executed multiple controlled drug buys from Johnson and Jones at the Super 8 Motel on Greentree Drive in East Stroudsburg.

On August 27, Stroudsburg defeated East Stroudsburg North, 9-1. The team netted nine goals in the contest with seven of them coming in the second half of play. Jacob Bajek, ’25, and Ben Pilcher, ’25 both had two goals in the game. Michael Padilla, ’25, Franco Ferro, ’25, Kacper Liszewski, ’25, Byulent Gegov, ’25, and Kai Schatzman, ’26, all put balls in the back of the net as well. Scoring wasn’t the only thing the Mounties did yesterday. Ferro and Pilcher had two assists, while Aiden Coyne, ’25, Schatzman, Matias Dunia, ’26, and Hunter Fuller, ’27 all had one. Stroudsburg goes for their second win on the season tomorrow at Nazareth High School at 6:30 p.m. They are back at home on Saturday against North Pocono High School at 11:00 a.m.  

On August 27, Stroudsburg dominated East Stroudsburg North, 9-0. Abby Grella, ’25, scored her second and third goals on the year and now leads the team. Amelia Nieman, ’25, and Kali Milonas, ’27, both netted two goals as well. Cam Beebe, ’25, Payton Pankowski, ’27, and Leah McWilliams, ’27, each scored once. Adriana Borzio, ’26, had three assists in the contest. Lila Smedley, ’26, and Alianna Mendez, ’26, both had an assist as well. Goalie, Sia Trotter, ’27, had her first career shutout in goal, not allowing a ball past her during the contest. This marks the girls’ second straight victory after they defeated Hazleton High School, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon. Stroudsburg will open their home slate against Nazareth High School on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
