Good samaritan reflects on rescuing man in deadly fire

EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An investigation continues into a fire that broke out at a bar in Monroe County last week, taking the lives of two people. Several first responder agencies were called to the scene, but others nearby stepped in to help those stuck inside. The smell of smoke is still in the air at the former Wander Inn Bar and Grill in East Stroudsburg on Monday. Two victims identified after deadly restaurant fire The building on South Courtland remains charred and filled with debris after flames broke out and engulfed it last week. “It was hot, it was smokey.” Fred Peck, a good samaritan who saw the fire and ran in its direction, helped a Stroud Area Regional Police Officer rescue a man stuck inside.

February School Board update

The Stroudsburg Area School Board met on February 19 for its monthly meeting to address proposed changes for the Stroudsburg Area School District. Student Representative to the School Board, Kona Maranpot, ’25, attended the meeting on behalf of Stroudsburg High School students. No issues were presented on the student body’s behalf.   According to the BoardDocs, the following items were discussed regarding the high school and district. Substitute teacher Andre Knight, a favored sub among SHS students, has been assigned to the junior high building as a long-term substitute. Saranda Kadrijaj, a paraprofessional, will be moving to the high school building. Nazariy Myshak, security guard, will also be moving to the high school building. 

Mountaineer Bake Sale

The Mountaineer staff will host a bakesale on Monday, St. Patty’s Day, during all lunches or until we run out. Bring your money, quantities are limited.

Track springs into 2025 season

Track tryouts for girls and guys were hosted last week at the SHS stadium for the 2025 spring season. The co-ed season schedule is the same for both teams. The track team is led by Brett Youngken, who also assists shotput.  Jake Cirillo and Jordan Fernandez are the javelin coaches; Nikolaos Kontos is the pole vaulting coach; Adam Carter is the jumping coach, Geoffrey Zimmerman is the discus coach; Ken Sickler is coaching hurdles; Eric Foti is the long-distance coach; James Miller is coaching shotput and long jump; William Walter coaches sprinting; Madison Harding coaches high jump. The ’24 track season was successful for the Mountaineers. They had an undefeated championship season.

Mount Pocono Awarded $5,000 from One For Nature for Knob Overlook Trail Project

Mount Pocono Borough has been awarded a $5,000 grant from One For Nature to support the creation of a new trail near the Knob Overlook. This project will create access to a trail that allows residents and visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of the Pocono Mountains. This is the second consecutive year that One For Nature has supported the Knob Overlook. Last year, their funding helped install directional signage, highlighting the area’s significance and breathtaking views.

Mount Pocono Borough Awarded $600,000 CFA Grant for Pine Hill Road Improvement

Exciting news for Mount Pocono! The Borough has been awarded a $600,000 grant from the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) to fund long-overdue improvements to Pine Hill Road. This critical project will enhance safety at one of our most challenging intersections by widening the road, installing a traffic light, and adding essential features to improve visibility and traffic flow. Anyone who has tried to pull out of Pine Hill Road knows how difficult—and dangerous—it can be. With limited sightlines and increasing traffic, this intersection has long needed attention. Thanks to this funding, we can finally move forward with making it safer for residents, commuters, and visitors alike. This project is part of our ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure, one step at a time.

Getting ready for upcoming PIAC Saint Patrick's Parade in Monroe County

The PIAC Saint Patrick's Parade steps off Sunday afternoon, March 23, at 1:15 p.m. in the heart of Monroe County.
