When East Stroudsburg University freshman Madison Siggins was in fourth grade, what started as a stomach virus spiraled into a frightening, months-long medical crisis that left her unable to eat, walk or communicate effectively. Now a member of ESU’s women’s basketball team after a standout high school sports career, Madison’s long road to recovery not only gave her a second chance at life, it also inspired her brother, senior ESU football player John Siggins, to pursue a degree in nursing so he could make a similar impact in the lives of others. “She was pretty close to not making it,” said John, who was in eighth grade at the time.  “Being around that experience really affected me and so I decided I wanted to help people out the same way my sister was helped out.”

Last night, Stroudsburg fell to East Stroudsburg South, 48-47. This was their fourth consecutive loss to open up the season after making the playoffs a year ago. Stroudsburg got out to an early lead in the first, forcing South to burn a timeout halfway through the quarter. Out of that timeout, South went on a 12-2 run that lasted into the second quarter. Stroudsburg was ice-cold, not being able to get a single bucket to fall. The Mountaineers were not able to score again until the 4-minute mark of the second quarter. They found themselves down by 6 going into the half. He recently resigned, but the district wants to rehire him with a hefty pay raise. This issue wasn't on tonight's agenda, but at least one board member brought up the issue and his concerns over the matter. The superintendent of Pleasant Valley School District James Konrad's salary was in the spotlight Thursday night. Konrad, who was in the top spot for three years, recently resigned. Now the district wants to rehire him and throw in a $25,000 increase, bringing his total salary to $215,000 a year, on par with other superintendents in the area.
