New resource aims to help student attendance, involvement

COOLBAUGH TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Schools are officially back in session. But for one district in Monroe County, a new resource for students and their families is also in full swing.

Excited voices and footsteps fill the halls of Clear Run Elementary Center in Coolbaugh Township as another school year has begun.

Aside from moving up a grade, students are also trying out a new program.

Communities in Schools, also known as ‘CIS’, place a liaison on school campuses to work with students and their families to fill the gap of whatever they need to succeed in the classroom.

The partnership has been two years in the making and is now operating in four of the Pocono Mountain West Schools. The goal is to improve attendance and family involvement.

Boys’ Soccer Shuts Out Nazareth

On Thursday, August 29, Stroudsburg visited Nazareth and defeated them, 1-0.

Going into halftime, the score was knotted at 0 with both goalies keeping the opposing team out of the net.

That would change in the second half as Franco Ferro,’25, put the ball past Nazareth’s goalie to make the score, 1-0. The goal was his second on the season. The assist on the goal went to Jacob Bajek, ’25. It was his first assist on the season.

That would be all Stroudsburg would need to secure their season victory on the season, winning 1-0.

Goalie Oliver Marga, ’25, was impressive in this outing, pitching a shutout in net.

Stroudsburg has been able to seperate themselves from the competition in the second half of games outscoring their opponents, 9-3.

After their loss on Saturday to North Pocono, their season record sits at 2-1. Stroudsburg’s record is good for 6th best in District 11 4A.

Football Defeats Wilkes-Barre to Advance to 2-0

On Friday, August 30, Stroudsburg defeated Wilkes-Barre, 35-20.

The scoring got started early as Wilkes-Barre marched down the field on the game’s opening drive to score a touchdown.

Stroudsburg responded right back with a touchdown of their own by running back Jaylin Rieara, ’26.

After that touchdown drive, Stroudsburg seemed to be stuck in the mud after a 30-yard touchdown pass gave Wilkes-Barre the lead. The Mountaineers did not match that same success as Wilkes-Barre got the ball back in control of the game, up 13-7.

The momentum shifted drastically in the second quarter as defensive end Mehki Kirkland, ’25, got into the backfield and caused a fumble, which linebacker James Kelly, ’25, scooped up for a touchdown to give Stroudsburg a 14-13 lead.

2024 New Editors-in-Chief Take the Reins

Summer comes to a close and the 2024-2025 school year begins.

A new school year carries as much weight of change, hope, and anticipation just as the ringing in of a new calendar year does, whether it’s fashion, student schedules, teacher schedules, or even lunch. A new school year is a fresh start for all. From new Student Handbooks to Faculty Manuals, classroom designs, dress code, and senior parking spots—the old becomes new again.

The Mountaineer is excited to embrace these changes with the staff and students of the Stroudsburg Area School District.

As a part of this change, we’d like to introduce our new Co-Editors-In-Chief: Alexis Binikos, ’25, Olivia Celano, ’25, and Jaden Harper, ’25.
