Eggs crisis affects community
Egg prices have been on the rise since last year and have doubled in the last three months, which is unprecedented.
Avian Influenza (AI) has killed approximately 15 percent of the bird population, which includes the 27 million birds lost since the beginning of the new year.
Officials say this situation will only get worse, which is why the Mountaineer reached out to the local Burger King at the Stroud Mall. Just a few weeks ago, they said the egg situation had not affected them “yet.”
When the newspaper asked Burger King’s General Manager, Rosanna, if her answer had changed within the last month, she stated “no”. She revealed that all their egg purchases go through the corporation. The chain restaurants or large corporations seem large enough to absorb increased costs without passing them down to consumers.

1st Singles – Logan Casebolt (‘25) defeated Jose Jimenez (‘27) with a solid 6-2, 6-3 victory.
2nd Singles – Tobias Ricks (‘26) put on a clinic, shutting out Talha Ahmed (‘25) 6-0, 6-0.

Brush fire, smoky conditions shut down road leading in and out of Florida Keys
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Traffic was flowing in and out of the Florida Keys on Wednesday after a brush fire led officials to briefly close U.S. 1, snarling traffic for hours for those trying to enter or leave island chain.
Card Sound Road, the only other road connecting the Keys to Florida City on the mainland, remained closed because of the fire, said Kristen Livengood, a spokeswoman for Monroe County.
“I do not have an estimated time frame for when it will reopen,” Livengood said in an email.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said motorists could expect lengthy delays along an 18-mile (29 kilometer) stretch of U.S. 1 “as fire crews intermittently block traffic for fire mitigation/air water drops.”
Celebrating initiatives committed to fight against opioid epidemic
STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Celebrating the initiatives that commit to continuing the fight against the opioid epidemic.
On Wednesday morning, the Monroe County commissioners commemorated the one-year anniversary of the Law Enforcement Treatment Initiative (LETI) Program and the "We Fight Fentanyl" campaign.
LETI and the we fight fentanyl campaign have seen great success in the past year.
Now, the county hopes to continue that momentum.
"Addiction is not prejudiced. It can consume anyone's family and take anyone's life," said Stephanie Blew in the We Fight Fentanyl Testimonial.
Stephanie from Saylorsburg knows firsthand the devastating effects of addiction; she lost her brother in 2019 and began her journey to overcome the disease nearly six years ago.
Now, she's saving lives by sharing her story as a part of Monroe County's We Fight Fentanyl Campaign.

Resident frustrated about years-long bridge closure
STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The buzzing of machinery is a constant sound at the site of the Glenbrook Road Bridge Project in Stroudsburg.
“It’s very loud, the pumps run 24/7. So, we can’t open a window.”
Resident Joan Fitzgerald lives right next door to the closure since it was damaged in August 2020 by tropical storm Isaias.

Innovative women of medicine
Women’s History Month is upon us, and it is a perfect time to celebrate the remarkable contribution women have made to the world. Among the many fields where women have made groundbreaking contributions, medicine stands as a testament to their resilience, brilliance, and dedication to saving lives. Despite facing discrimination and societal barriers, pioneering women in medicine have paved the way for future generations.
Historically, women were often denied access to medical education and professional opportunities. However, through perseverance and unwavering commitment, many defied these obstacles, setting new standards in healthcare.
