MT. POCONO, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Pocono Mountains Community Fundraiser gets underway on Wednesday night. The big event, now in its 20th year, will grant select non-profits serving Monroe County with some major funding.

Zechariah and Makayla are reading their favorite books, a skill the nine-year-old twins only learned within the last two years.

"They couldn't read, write, they didn't know their ABCs, 123's when they got here," explained Angela Clingan from Mount Pocono, the twins' grandmother.

Mount Pocono Borough Council is accepting letters of interest to fill an open seat on the Borough Council.

Any registered (elector) voter, who has resided in the Borough of Mount Pocono continuously for at least one (1) year, wanting to be considered, should send a letter of interest by Friday, September 29, 2023, by 3:00 P.M. As paving is becoming more expensive, a Monroe County municipality is looking to save money by trying out a different process to fix its roads. Pocono Township is the first in the area to try out microsurfacing.

SEALED PROPOSALS will be accepted by Mount Pocono Borough until 1:00 PM, on Friday, May 19, 2023 at the Mount Pocono Borough Building, 1361 Pocono Blvd., Suite 100, Mount Pocono, PA 18344, for the following Contract:

“2023 Paving Proposal” on various streets in Mount Pocono Borough, Monroe County
1,083 Tons of 9.5mm Scratch/Leveling and Wearing Course Base Bid
1,560 Tons of 9.5mm Scratch/Leveling and Wearing Course Alternate Bid

All materials must meet PENNDOT Pub. 408 Specifications and Standards.  Bidders need to be PENNDOT prequalified.

Pennsylvania American Water Company (PAWC) will be making major repairs to the water main in a few different locations in Mount Pocono. Areas that will be affected will be Heath Lane, Shelley Lane, Mountain Drive, and Summit Ave. PAWC will begin these repairs on or around May 1st. You will be receiving a notification directly from PAWC. Please refer to their notice and offices for more information.

As of March 1, 2023 GFL is entering a new three-year residential trash collection service contract with the Borough. The new rate is $32.93 per dwelling unit for trash and recycling services. Please note that the old rate was a rate that was secured over five years ago. With inflation and rising labor costs this rate was due to increase during the next contract which is this year. Out of only a few bids received by the Borough, GFL was still the cheapest rate.

The Borough of Mount Pocono will receive sealed bids for municipal solid waste collection and disposal services, curbside recycling collection and processing services; and leaf/yard waste collection and processing services at the Mount Pocono Borough Office, 1361 Pocono Boulevard, Suite 100, Mount Pocono, PA until 1 p.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.  The bids will be opened publicly and read aloud at that time.

Major Claudette Williams, will raise awareness for women who serve and highlight the many roles women have played in the military over the years.
