2023 Senior Expo Draws Hundreds
This week, I hosted the annual 2023 Senior Expo – offering dozens of senior service vendors and resources to the attendees. So appreciative of the many organizations and individuals who made this event a success. First, thank you to Pocono Mountain School District and their staff for coordinating alongside my staff and I. To the many vendors who attended and shared critical information with our seniors – we appreciate your services in our community.
Thank you to Highmark Insurance for providing lunch to all the vendors and staff and to Bill’s Shop Rite for providing refreshments and snacks to all the seniors in attendance. And to our lively entertainment, Elvis, thank you to Kevin and Dorothy MacIntire for your tribute performance.
The event truly promises something for everyone – I hope the Expo was informative and productive for our seniors. Click here to view a news story on the event.
Legislative Update
This week, the PASSHE Board of Governors voted to freeze tuition for the upcoming academic year. This marks the 6th year where tuition rates have remained the same – a direct result of the Senate’s leadership and budget advocacy.
Additionally, the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) is holding two free statewide webinars to assist with college-bound students and their families with navigating the financial aid process.
Speakers will discuss how students and families can take advantage of PA Forward, which is Pennsylvania’s state-based private student loan option offered by PHEAA.
The first webinar, Deep Dive into Covering the Gap, will be held Tuesday, July 25, at noon. The second, Borrowing for Education – Which Loan is Right for Me?, will be held Thursday, July 27, at 6:30 p.m. Register to attend the one-hour webinars here.
District Update
In addition to the Senior Expo, I spent time at several meetings and events throughout the 40th Senatorial District.
Last weekend I visited Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm (pictured bottom right) to celebrate their 60th anniversary. This farm acts as a live museum, preserving 19th century Pennsylvania German agriculture heritage. Learn more about them here.
This week, we recognized Jesse Scavone, owner at JTH Salon in East Stroudsburg (pictured bottom left). I received a letter through my office noting Jesse’s dedication and service within our community, here is a quote from the letter: “I am writing to bring your attention to an exceptional individual in our community who has made a significant impact through his selfless actions and dedication to serving others.” Jesse has built a reputation of exceptional character through countless service-oriented initiatives. We are blessed to have amazing individuals throughout our community doing incredible work quietly without seeking recognition. It is always important to highlight their efforts as encouragement and reminders of the love we should all have for each other.
This week, I had the opportunity to participate in the Valley Community Library’s Storytime Series (pictured top right). The library is hosting a guest each week from various occupations to read to their students. As a reminder, our libraries are an outstanding community resource – thank you to all the staff for their dedication to accessible knowledge in our communities.
The Wayne / Pike County Conservation District (pictured top left) hosted their annual legislative breakfast – a wonderful opportunity to learn about their programming, efforts, and conservation work.
