28/22 News headed over to Pocono Wildlife Center in Stroudsburg to find out if the uptick in black bear sightings is normal.

“There really isn’t anything causing this, there are more people out. There are more people looking all over the place, hiking, and enjoying the outdoors and so they’re seeing more wildlife and so they’re seeing more bears,” said Susan Downing the Co-Executive Director at Pocono Wildlife.

Students jammed out in Jenkins Township

JENKINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Students from four counties got together Thursday afternoon to jam and prepare for an upcoming special program.

Thursday afternoon, members from the PA Jazz Institute rehearsed at the WVIA Studios in Pittston for their upcoming performance at the Downtown Scranton Jazz Fest. The ensemble is made up of students from Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, and Monroe Counties.

Shots fired in Stroudsburg prompts shooting investigation

STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police are investigating a shooting after an altercation between a group caused shots fired in Stroudsburg Thursday.

According to the Stroud Area Regional Police Department, around 1:00 a.m. officers were called to the 600 block of Main Street for shots fired.

An investigation showed the shots took place on North 6th Street after a physical altercation with a group of people. Officers said they located one bullet hole in a nearby business. 

43 charged in PA for public assistance fraud

Investigators believe it's an isolated incident between the group of people involved and there were no known injuries.

Mohegan PA fined $50K for allowing two underage on gaming floor

PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has fined Mohegan Pennsylvania in Plains Township $50,000 for allowing people under the age of 21 to access the gaming floor.

According to the PA Gaming Control Board, in the first incident, a person gained access multiple times to gamble and in a second incident, a person gained access and was provided alcohol.

The board also banned seven adults from all casinos throughout the state for leaving a total of nine minors unattended to engage in gaming activities.

PSPCA holds $10 dog adoption weekend

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — The PSPCA is setting a $10 adoption fee for all dogs over one year old.

Over 170 dogs, 27 other animals rescued from PA home

The event will be happening from Friday, July 28 through Sunday, July 30 at the following adoption centers:

  • PSPCA Philadelphia Headquarters
  • PSPCA Danville Center
  • PSPCA Lancaster Center
  • MainLine Animal Rescue

After rescuing over 170 dogs in a Monroe County home, the shelters are at capacity and looking for new homes for the dogs.

The majority of the dogs are small, friendly, and would benefit from living with other dogs the shelter says.

Over $100 worth of cigars stolen, man charged

BRODHEADSVILLE, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State police have charged a man after they say he stole over $100 worth of cigars from a store in Monroe County.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, troopers were called for retail theft at Maxi's Cigar & Cigarettes in Brodheadsville on July 19 around 10:00 a.m.

Home destroyed by apparent explosion in Carbon County

Police say the suspect, Joseph Mastranderea, 56, of Jim Thorpe stole 11 cigars totaling a loss of $146.69.

Charges have been filed against Mastranderea for retail theft.

Teen allegedly trying to flee police drags officer with car

TANNERSVILLE, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A teen has been arrested and charged after police say he attempted to flee a party and dragged an officer with his car.

According to the Pocono Township Police Department, on Saturday, July 22 around 2:30 a.m. officers were called for a reported loud party in the area of Birch Hill Drive in Cobble Creek Estates.

Once officers arrived on the scene they saw a car abruptly fleeing the area and the driver, Shawn Lesoine, 19, from Brodheadsville, was stopped by police. While speaking with Lesoine investigators said he showed signs of possibly being impaired by alcohol.
