Barrett Township, PA (October 11, 2023) – A major collision occurred on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at the intersection of Rt 390 and Skytop Drive. Around 11:49 a.m., a box truck collided with a pole, leading to a rollover. As a result, communication wires fell to the ground.

An innovative partnership between two area community colleges and two regional universities will keep students on a pathway to a college degree with a variety of transfer agreements that will benefit students whose journey to higher education may have been interrupted.

Entitled “It’s Not Over,” this pilot project brings together Lehigh Carbon Community College, Northampton Community College, Kutztown University and East Stroudsburg University to create opportunities for students seeking an associate degree and ultimately a bachelor’s degree.

Students who were not retained by Kutztown or East Stroudsburg and are in the community college service areas will receive information to help them navigate their credits to their designated community colleges, otherwise known as reverse transfer, to earn an associate degree. They will be encouraged to use that degree to transfer back to the university to earn their bachelor’s degree.

This summer, Amie Garcia, 11, participated in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) at Keystone College. She was selected from a pool of applications from across northeastern Pennsylvania (NEPA). 

RYLA is an intensive leadership program for sophomores, who have shown leadership in their community. The program is run by Rotary, an organization that works on humanitarian projects all over the world and teaches leadership skills to kids from NEPA. 

While there, Garcia created an eight-page paper that showcased everything they did in the program. This includes completing icebreaker activities, learning new dances, meeting guest speakers, and going to a homecoming-type dance.

According to Garcia, they learned leadership skills in an environment much like a regular camp. There, they were forced out of their comfort zone.

I currently teach at Stroudsburg Junior High School. I have also taught at Stroudsburg High School.

 

What subject(s) do you teach? 

I teach Career Awareness, Computer Skills, Introduction to Business, and 19th c American History.

 

What grade (s) do you teach? 

I teach both 8th and 9th grade. 

 

How long have you been teaching at SASD? 

This is my 22nd year teaching at SASD.

 

What is one important lesson you have learned as an educator? 

I learned that teaching is ever evolving and you need to evolve with it.  Also, you need to constantly try to improve because the world is changing and improving as well.
