NFL draft prospect from Monroe County dies at 25

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — An NFL draft prospect from Monroe County has sadly passed away.Devastating news hit the football world as AJ Simon, a star at Pocono Mountain West High School, and later on at Bloomsburg University as well as the University of Albany, passed away Tuesday at the age of 25.“He was a tremendous young man and even better teammate and he served as a pillar to the Great Danes program over the last two years. Before Albany, Simon was an all-PSAC East First Team Defensive Lineman at Bloomsburg. Leading the team in tackles for loss and leading the entire conference in sacks with 9.5 this past season. Simon was a first-team conference member for Albany to finish the year with 12.5 sacks before declaring for the 2024 NFL draft.At this time the cause of Simon’s death is unknown, as soon as we learn that information we’ll pass it along.

Man dead, woman rescued from burning home in Monroe County

HAMILTON TWP., Pa. -- A Monroe County man and his dog are dead, following a fire at their home.But a woman was pulled out of the burning home alive. State Police troopers made the rescue overnight in Hamilton Township, near Stroudsburg.Neighbors say the woman cared for her middle-aged son, who was in a wheelchair, the result of a car accident.The victims haven't been officially ID'd but the tragic incident is bringing neighbors together.“We were here when he got Buster, we knew how much he loved Buster.”Family friends Joe and Gloria Sullivan arrived to retrieve the body of Buster, the family's now deceased dog. Instead of the bulldog being taken to a mass grave, they are taking him to an animal crematorium. This, after a fire tore through the Hamilton Township home, which also took the life of Buster's owner.Joe would often drive him around in his classic car.

Cracking Down On Aggressive Driving In Monroe County

Police throughout Monroe County are targeting aggressive drivers this month. Stroud Area Regional Police monitored traffic today along Lower Main Street in Stroudsburg. It's known as a raceway to police and a high volume crash area. And today, News13’s Nicole Walters got to ride-along as vehicles were cited for speeding in Stroudsburg.  "BEEP! That was at 42 miles per hour." The sound of someone speeding and an officer is cued to go after that vehicle. Stroud Area Regional Police set up the speed trap on Lower Main Street in Stroudsburg this morning. "He has a box in there that registers the speed that’s coming from the ESP device that we have out here in the roadway, it’s two lasers so it’s a very accurate read of the speed." Vehicle after vehicle is pulled over.

ESU HRTM Students Spend Spring Break in Italy

HRTM Study Abroad in ItalyEast Stroudsburg University students studying Hospitality, Recreation, and Tourism Management (HRTM) had the opportunity to study abroad in Italy for nine days earlier this semester. Dr. Stanley Chiang, professor and chair of HRTM, Dr. Fredrick Meitner, assistant professor of HRTM, and Steven Ives, manager international programs, accompanied 14 students on a trip that offered a unique blend of cultural immersion and industry exploration.
