BLAKESLEE, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Household safety is the reason behind one disposal event set to take place in Monroe County.

Whether you’re spring cleaning with bleach or doing yardwork tackling some weeds - you most likely will use products like these in your home.

But did you know they could be dangerous if thrown away?

“Fertilizer, weed killer, old gasoline, diesel fuel, propane. Things like that are considered household hazardous waste.”

Mike Stettler is the executive director of Monroe County Municipal Waste Management Authority in Blakeslee.

Also working as a volunteer firefighter, he explains the dangers items such as lithium batteries or oil-based paint can cause.

The SHS Environmental Club, ran by AP environmental teacher David Hakim,  has plans to help the school courtyards reach their full potential.  

“It’s sad to see that we don’t use them because of how nice they are, so I’m hoping to renovate them and open them to in school use,” expressed Ann Alekseyev, 11, the club leader. 

On Friday, May 24, the Environmental Club plans on re-homing plants they had been working with into one of the courtyards by the cafeteria. 

The end goal is to make the courtyards more appealing to students, but Alekseyev hopes it could be more.

“I was hoping to have a specific time during lunch where students can go get fresh air because it feels like having a courtyard not only for seniors would do so much for the school,” Alekseyev explained.
