Residents turn out to protest ‘warehouse-ification’ of the Poconos (Coolbaugh)
About 70 people from around the Poconos are begging the state’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to stop the region’s newest warehouse.
Blue Ridge Real Estate (BRRE) wants to build its second warehouse on State Route 940 in Kidder Township, Carbon County. Some residents fear the project doesn’t take enough precautions to protect Black Creek, a DEP-designated high quality stream.
They formed LOVE Kidder Township, a protest group to fight what they see as region-wide warehouse overdevelopment.
Blue Ridge Real Estate declined an interview. Attorney Mike Malloy said his client has said all it has to say on the project and protestors’ reactions.
The DEP has noted a series of deficiencies in Blue Ridge’s stormwater application. It’s in technical review, which means the DEP will review the application with heightened scrutiny, according to a DEP letter sent to Blue Ridge.

FBLA pitches to JHS looking for recruits
Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is a student organization that connects teenagers from all over the world. Some colleges have FBLA Collegiate, a version of FBLA for college students getting ready to step into their professional career fields. FBLA offers many practical experiences to students.
Students compete in events through tests, presentations, speeches, etc. Skills needed for these events can be applied to future careers. Being exposed to these situations early helps students to better prepare for real-world opportunities when it knocks.
Students can volunteer and help their community through connections the club has with local businesses and organizations. FBLA has local connections to Quiet Valley Historical Farm and Stroudsburg United Methodist Church Soup Kitchen. It also helps coordinate volunteers for school events like Craftsfest and Musicfest.
Gaining freedom, friendships one mile at a time in Monroe County
EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — Since 2004, the Pocono Mountains Community Fundraiser has raised more than $3,000,000 for dozens of non-profits, as Monroe County’s largest single-event fundraiser.
This year, three deserving organizations were selected to receive funding and will be honored at a big event.
These days, 87-year-old Howard Dickinson III relies on a special cane and lenses to get around. In 2017 he developed glaucoma, causing him to lose his driver's license and sense of freedom.
"So when that happened it was like the end of the world here in the Poconos, so what would I do?" Howard said.
But Howard, who served in the army during the Cuban Missle Crisis, is back on the road again thanks to Sights for Hope, which provides transportation to those with visual impairments.
Throughout the week, drivers, like Kareem Harvey, take clients to their medical appointments and to run errands.
