Welcome autumn with Eastern Monroe Public Library’s exciting October lineup! Our three branches are offering a variety of free programs to engage and enrich our community. From a Fall Herb Planter Workshop to a lively fundraiser at Renegade Winery, from practical sessions on fraud prevention to cultural events like our free movie screening and R&B concert, there’s something for everyone. Hughes Library Adult Programs 

Regular Programs

  • Chair Yoga (Mondays) Every Monday, 2:00pm (unless otherwise specified) — Community Room (NO CLASS 10/7 & 10/14)
    Join our chair yoga sessions, open to all skill levels. Please dress comfortably, bring water, and feel free to bring your own yoga mat. Space is limited to 50 participants, available on a first-come, first-served basis. For October, no class 10/7 and 10/14.
  • ESL Sessions (Tuesdays) Every Tuesday, 5:30pm Beginner Session/6:30pm Advanced Session – Eisemann Room
     ESL (English as a Second Language) classes are every Tuesday at Hughes Library in the Eisemann Room. Beginner classes are from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. Intermediate/Advanced classes are from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. You do not need to register—just come in! Space is limited, so arrive early to get a seat. Improve your English skills!   • Color Yourself Calm (Wednesdays) Every Wednesday, 12:30pm-3:00pm (drop-in) — Pullen Room
    Drop in for a self-guided coloring session where all ages and abilities are welcome. With provided materials and soothing music, you can relax, socialize, or enjoy some quiet time at your own pace. 
  • Tech Thursdays (Thursdays) Every Thursday, 2:00pm – 3:00pm — Pullen Room Tech Thursdays take place every Thursday at 2 PM in the Pullen Room, featuring a variety of tech and computer topics designed for beginners. Due to limited space, registration is required. (See below for class descriptions.)
  • Chair Cardio/Movement (Fridays) Every Friday, 2:00pm (unless otherwise specified) — Community Room (NO CLASS 10/4 & 10/18)

HUB Book Club

Tuesday, October 1st, 6:00pm — Pullen Room/ Zoom

This month’s selection of the Hughes United Book Club (HUB) is Nikki Erlick’s The Measure. An e-book copy of this title is available on Hoopla and print copies available to be placed on hold in our catalog. Red Cross Blood Drive

Wednesday, October 2nd, 9:00am-2:30pm — Community Room

Join us for a vital blood drive hosted by the American Red Cross at Hughes Library. Both Power Red and Whole Blood donations will be accepted. Registration is required—call 1-800-RED CROSS or visit redcross.org/rapidpass to schedule your appointment and help save lives.

Powerpoint for Beginners (Tech Thursday Class)

Thursday, October 3rd, 2:00pm — Pullen Room

This beginner-friendly session is designed for those new to creating slideshows or seeking a refresher. Participants should have basic familiarity with using a computer, including using a mouse and typing. Whether you’re a student, professional, or enthusiast, join us to gain essential PowerPoint skills. Registrations required due to limited space. Corks & Classics Library Fundraiser

Wednesday, October 2nd, 6:00pm-8:00pm — Renegade Winery, 600 Main St., Stroudsburg

Join us for an unforgettable evening of wine, food, and live music at Renegade Winery! Your $25 ticket includes a glass of wine, delicious food tastings, raffle tickets, and chances to win door prizes every 15 minutes. Enjoy live music by Son Lewis while mingling with fellow library supporters. Get your tickets at Hughes Library or online—don’t miss out!

Evening Chair Zumba with Danny Grae

Thursday, October 3rd, 5:30pm — Community Room

Discover the joy of Chair Zumba with Danny, a seated adaptation of the popular Zumba dance fitness program, perfect for all fitness levels and abilities, including wheelchair users. Led by licensed instructor Danny Grae, this class offers a fun upper body workout with easy-to-follow choreography and plenty of laughs. Registration is requested; walk-ins are welcome. Words & Film Free Movie Matinee: A Haunting in Venice

Sunday, October 6th, 2:00pm — Community Room

Join us for a free film matinee at the library featuring A Haunting in Venice (PG-13), starring Kyle Allen, Kenneth Branagh, and Camille Cottin. Based on Agatha Christie’s Hallowe’en Party, this mystery thriller follows retired detective Poirot as he uncovers a murder after a seance in post-war Venice. It’s the perfect way to get into the Halloween or autumnal spirit!

Sit & Stitch: Sunday Edition

Sunday, October 6th, 1pm-3:30pm (drop-in) — Eisemann Room

Join us for a relaxing, self-guided crafting social on select Sundays! Bring your current project and connect with fellow crafters in a friendly, supportive environment. All skill levels are welcome. Sit & Stitch 
1st & 3rd Mondays, 3:30pm-5:00pm (drop-in) — Community Room
October Sessions: Monday, October 7th and Monday, October 21st
Join us at Hughes Library for a creative crafting session where all crafts and skill levels are welcome! Bring your own supplies and enjoy a self-guided experience every 1st and 3rd Monday from 3:30pm to 5pm in the Community Room. While there is no formal instruction, you’ll find a supportive atmosphere with friendly crafters ready to chat and help. Drop in or stay for the whole time—everyone is welcome!

Informational Literacy: How to Recognize Disinformation (Tech Thursday Class)

Breast Cancer Health Booth

Friday, October 18th, 1:00pm-4:00pm (drop-in, no appointment needed) — Hughes Lobby

Drop by the Hughes Library Lobby between 1 PM and 4 PM to visit our Breast Cancer Health Booth! Speak with a PA Department of Health representative about breast cancer awareness, early detection, and prevention strategies. Learn how to stay proactive about your health and develop healthy habits. No appointment necessary.

Free BookHouse Concert: Areé (R&B/Hip-Hop)

Friday, October 18th, 7:00pm — Community Room

Admission is free and open to the public, and refreshments are available for a modest charge. Areé is a recording artist and vocal instructor who brings her talents and skills together for a night of rhythmic and enjoyable music. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please plan to arrive before the scheduled starting time. The BookHouse program takes place in the Hughes Branch’s Edinger Community Room of Eastern Monroe Public Library, located at 1002 North 9th Street (Rt. 611 and Chipperfield Drive) in Stroudsburg. Ask a Master Gardener (Last Session of 2024!)

Word Play Social
Every Fourth Tuesday, 1:30pm – 4:00pm (drop in) — Pullen Room
October Session: Tuesday, October 22nd
Join us for a fun and social word game gathering every fourth Tuesday from 1:30pm to 4pm at Hughes Library. Whether you’re an experienced player or new to the games, drop in anytime during the event. Use one of the provided Scrabble, Bananagrams, and other word game boards, or bring your own favorite. It’s a self-guided, come-and-go event – stay for the whole time or just stop by for a bit. Feel free to bring friends or make new ones

Library Board Game Night

Wednesday, October 23rd, 4:00pm – 8:00pm — Community Room

Join us for fun and games, meet new people, and bring your favorite tabletop games! (Or try ours!) Open to all, ages 14+. No experience required, all skill levels welcome.

Introduction to Music Streaming: Spotify (Tech Thursday Class)

Join us for a beginner-friendly session on Spotify, where you’ll learn to access its vast library of music and podcasts. Basic computer skills are helpful, and bringing your Spotify login will enhance your experience. Artist-Guided Bookmark Making Workshop

The Adam Strunk Murder of 1901: A Local History Lecture with Local History & Genealogy Librarian Jim Adams

Saturday, October 26th, 2:00pm — Eisemann Room

Delve into a chilling local murder case of Constable Adam Strunk from 1901 that’s perfect for the Halloween season. Join us for an engaging lecture on this historic crime and its aftermath. The Smithfields Library Branch’s Omnivorous Readers Bookclub (ORB) is alive and well! The book theme for this month is Award-Winners. Booktalk Book Club

The Pocono Township Booktalk Book Club will be reading Valerie Perrin’s Fresh Water for Flowers this month. The club is meeting in-person. You can email the branch at ptl@monroepl.org for more information. New members are always welcome.

Litlover’s Book Club

The Pocono Township LitLovers Book Club will be reading Angie Kim’s Happiness Falls this month. We will also be discussing last month’s book David Grann’s Killers of the Flower Moon. We will have stories, songs and a special Halloween craft followed by Trick-or-Treating and a Costume Parade! Our PA Department of Health nurse will also be here to go over Halloween safety with everyone. Don’t miss it!
