BRODHEADSVILLE, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A federal investigation is underway into political flyers dumped into the trash in Monroe County.
"It was surprising because..one, she shouldn't be dumping here, and two, she had a postal uniform on and postal hat," said Blue Line Security Guard Mike.
Mike is a security guard at the Shop Rite Plaza in Brodheadsville, Monroe County.
He says the mail was dumped last week into this trash can at the end of the parking lot.
"I observed the car pull up here, open its trunk, and they weren't unloading groceries. I was looking through binoculars seeing what they were doing and she took something from the back of the trunk and went over and put it in the trash can over here," Mike explained.
The woman dumped several bins, similar to US Postal Service bins, into the trash can.
"In the back of the trunk when she had it open she had three bins, not the long ones, the square ones, about a foot high, and she had one inside the other and had one alongside the other one," Mike continued.
"What kind of mail was it for the most part? Was it election mail, like flyers, that kind of thing?" 28/22 News Reporter Andy Mehalshick asked.
Monroe County DA investigating fraudulent mail-in ballot requests"Flyers, information for voting, and some personal mail," Mike answered.
"Is there any chance she wasn't a postal worker? Maybe she was wearing a uniform that looked like a postal worker?" Mehalshick questioned.
"No, it was a postal uniform..shirt and hat. I'm positive of that," Mike replied.
The US Postal Inspector is now investigating the incident and advised the security company not to release details of the contents of the mail or video of the dumping incident that was captured by store security cameras.
"Andy, it doesn't matter whether it's a political mail or regular mail: A postal worker should not be delivering mail to a garbage can. It should be delivered to the person it is addressed to," Mike added.
Ed Gaba shops at the store every week. He was shocked to hear about the investigation.
"If she's a postal worker or if she or he is a postal worker, obviously that is a crime and shouldn't be allowed. That should be investigated. Mail should always be delivered," Gaba stated.
