BLAKESLEE, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Household safety is the reason behind one disposal event set to take place in Monroe County.

Whether you’re spring cleaning with bleach or doing yardwork tackling some weeds - you most likely will use products like these in your home.

But did you know they could be dangerous if thrown away?

“Fertilizer, weed killer, old gasoline, diesel fuel, propane. Things like that are considered household hazardous waste.”

Mike Stettler is the executive director of Monroe County Municipal Waste Management Authority in Blakeslee.

Also working as a volunteer firefighter, he explains the dangers items such as lithium batteries or oil-based paint can cause.

“If we can get these things out of storage if they’re not being used anymore, it’s a good time to get rid of them. That way there’s not an explosive aspect to it, if we come to a fire, and also the air quality that’s around us.”

That’s why Monroe County residents can properly get rid of them through a disposal event on June 15th.

“The household hazardous waste event happens biannually and waste authority officials encourage more people to take part to learn about potential threats of items in their homes.”

Stettler says the East Coast faces a shortage of landfills and participating in disposal events or preplanning when shopping for these items can help the regional issue.

“We want to try to recycle and dispose of things properly. Recycling is the big thing, working toward zero waste would be a great goal to have.”

The household hazardous waste event will take place on military road in Stroudsburg on June 15th from 8 a.m. To 2 p.m.

Monroe County residents who would like to participate need to pre-register.
