EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Several families were chased from their homes after a fire in the Poconos Sunday afternoon.

First responders say several fire departments were dispatched to the 200 block of North Courtland Street in East Stroudsburg for a reported apartment building fire around 12:15 p.m.

Officials tell 28/22 News the fire started in the back of the building and quickly spread to the front. The building is now a total loss.

The winner of the sweepstakes to buy the Trexler Scout Reservation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to sheltering veterans and helping them obtain quality health care.

In a letter posted to its Facebook page Thursday, the Minsi Trails Council Executive Board said it has voted to sell the 755-acre Boy Scout camp in Polk Township, Monroe County, to the Trexler Veterans Initiative for $7.8 million.

The fate of the Trexler Scout Reservation is still in the air, but organizations have been putting together bids to take over the 755-acre piece of nature in Polk Township.

One of them is the Pocono Heritage Land Trust, which recently submitted a bid for the Boy Scout camp, which has a history stretching back more than 90 years. Executive Director Louise Troutman was limited in what she could say because of a non-disclosure agreement, but was worried about potential competition for Camp Trexler.

The Pocono Township Board of Commissioners implemented a one mill tax increase for 2023 to address continued stagnant revenues, an ongoing budget deficit and significant personnel-driven cost increases. In addition, the Township has been taking definitive steps to plan for the renovation and/or relocation of the Township municipal facilities.

In real numbers, one mill is equivalent to $100 for every $100,000 in assessed value. Therefore, if Monroe County assigns a property an assessed value of $200,000, a one mill tax increase is $200.
