Steamtown National Historic Site plans a fall foliage rail excursion from Scranton to Tobyhanna in celebration of the area's historic ice harvesting industry.
Departing from Steamtown at 11 a.m., vintage passenger cars pulled by heritage steam or diesel locomotives will take passengers along the former Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad's mainline, arriving at 12:15 p.m. at the Tobyhanna station, the line's highest elevation through the Poconos.
There will be a two-hour layover in Tobyhanna. Upon arrival, take a half-mile guided walking tour to Tobyhanna Mill Pond #1 ice house. Or, take a self-guided tour of Tobyhanna. Featuring the fall foliage and the once important Tobyhanna huckleberry industry.
The train departs Tobyhanna at 2:45 p.m., and arrives back at Steamtown at 4 p.m.
