Volunteering is a common activity for Stroudsburg High School students. Most students volunteer on the weekends or in their spare time.

Some students get more enthusiastic about volunteering when they realize that volunteering looks good on their college applications.

Colleges love community service from their applicants because it shows that a student will not only be involved in school but will also leave a positive impact on campus and the rest of the community.

Many of SHS’s clubs and organizations offer volunteer opportunities around town. Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Interact Club, National Honor Society (NHS), and Key Club are all clubs that have new volunteer opportunities monthly.

Key Club and NHS require members to volunteer to remain in the clubs.

“I believe that volunteering, apart from personal development, is one of the most rewarding activities someone could spend their time with.”

Who is benefiting from volunteering more, the volunteer or the recipient?

When kids help out their community, they bring attention to churches, stores, and overlooked local places. Some places get used to high school kids coming out to help them and even request SHS to send them again.

Quiet Valley Historical Farm is one of these places and they have become very acquainted with FBLA. FBLA posts volunteer opportunities for almost all of their events, especially their largest one; the Harvest Festival. Many members volunteer here to receive credit for many hours of hard volunteering work.

One member of FBLA, Leyla Yilmaz, is acknowledged for the Top 10 Most Hours Volunteered across America. She has almost 300 hours of volunteer service so far just this year.

Leyla Yilmaz, ‘26, says, “It [volunteering] is a great way to connect with your community, give to those in need, and become friends with people who you never thought you would say a word to.”

National Honor Society members will be offering tutoring services again. Flyer shared by Maureen Verwey and NHS club.

Including Yilmaz’s hours, FBLA as a group, has more than 1,000 hours of volunteering hours accumulated.

NHS has started its peer tutoring program again. NHS members volunteer their valuable time to tutor their peers in struggling classes.

NHS also hosts two annual blood drives, but this upcoming year, they will conduct one bigger one on March 18, 2025.

Regardless of who benefits, volunteering is good for the community and it’s heavily encouraged to participate in some of the schools volunteer opportunities to make a difference.

Alisabeth Guepet, ’25, volunteers monthly and is very close with the Stroudsburg United Methodist Church.

She stated, “Volunteering is an important way to connect with the community, give back to others, and make a lasting impact on the world around us.”

The act of volunteering is a great way to help your community, and the feeling of contributing to your society is the most rewarding payment.
