The 2025 Major League Baseball (MLB) season is in full swing. Starting on Feb. 20, the Cubs played the Dodgers in the first spring training game of the season. The rest of the teams will start the dates of Feb. 21 and 22.
The offseason has grown anticipation for some fan bases, and disappointed others. One of the most surprising trades of the postseason was Juan Soto being traded from the New York Yankees to the New York Mets, fifteen years making 765 million dollars.
“When the Mets first announced Soto as an option, I didn’t really want him because they were going to spend so much money. But, when he came to the Mets, I was thrilled and realized what a great decision Steve Cohen made by spending that much on him. He just wants to win which is great. I think they will have a great season!” says Paul Malachowsky, math department teacher.
Other fanbases level their anticipation based off of the past postseason. The Yankees and Dodgers played in the ‘24 World Series, with the Dodgers taking the trophy after only five out of seven games. Two already very good teams will keep their anticipation high.
Other teams like the Miami Marlins, and the Chicago White Sox have lower expectations. According to MLB Standings, the Marlins had a record of 62 wins and 100 losses, and the White Sox with 41 wins and 121 losses.
Most teams in the northeast and northwest travel south for spring training since the frigid temperatures of this winter would not be enjoyable to play baseball in.
Opening Day for the 2025 season is Thursday March 27, 2025. According to BEIN Sports, this Opening Day marks the earliest start to the season in MLB history. Fans can purchase tickets now at MLB, and select their team to purchase from.
“I am a Pittsburgh Pirates fan and I anticipate that the Pirates will start winning some games. I hope that they keep their good players. They need to spend more money,” says Katren Lavra, ’26
The Stroudsburg season also will begin with the baseball team playing their first game on March 20, and softball has their first game on March 17.
As Opening Day approaches, how do you feel about your team, and who are you rooting for?
