STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It’s officially the first day of spring and one local shop in the Poconos is making sure you’re up to date on your knowledge of all things plants.
All shades of green overwhelm the inside of The Potting Shed, off Ann Street in Stroudsburg.
House plants have taken over the shop on the first day of spring but manager Judy Henry says it’s all for an annual ‘plant explosion’ event on Saturday.
“We fill up the store with three times more plants than we normally have with every different plant that I can possibly find that’s interesting, from interesting to something basic so you can kind of find almost everything.”
Starting at 10 a.m. demonstrations will also take place - such as taking a glass globe. Some rocks and plants with a touch of moss. To create an air plant terrarium.
At Saturday’s event, you can learn helpful tips such as if your plant is not thriving, your pot may be too big.”
“You only ever want to go up an inch to two inches bigger in the pot size that you’re transplanting it to. That way the plant has time to adjust to it. It would be kind of like you wearing shoes that are too big for you, you’re going to get blisters before your feet ever grow into them.”
Exploring the world of plants such as air-purifying ones like the snake plant Henry says this weekend’s event is perfect timing. The recent sunshine and warmer weather have brought in more customers.
“When it is so dark and so dank, they just want to be surrounded by green, so it kind of starts in January where they’re coming in to buy something new just to put in their house that they can feel the green and feel new growth in their homes.”
Running from 10 to 5 on Saturday, the first 50 guests at the potting shed’s ‘plant explosion’ event will receive a free plant to take home.
