Search for killer in 1970 Monroe County homicide continues

BARRETT TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State police are continuing their investigation into finding the killer of a 1970 homicide in Monroe County.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, on September 8, 1970, John William Leonard, Sr., was found dead in his taxi cab on the grounds of the Buck Hill Falls Lodge in Barrett Township. Leonard was pronounced dead at the scene with the cause of death being multiple gunshot wounds.

Police say Leonard left Mick’s Taxi Garage in Cresco for the two-mile ride to Buck Hill Falls Lodge. The employee saw Leonard’s taxi stop and a man with dark hair, between the ages of 30-40 approached the vehicle.

The sketch of the unknown man who approached the taxi was wearing a blue-green windbreaker, dark pants, and dark-framed glasses.

Leonard, Sr., was 52 at the time of his murder, he was a World War II Veteran and had been a Prisoner of War for over 22 months.

The investigation remains open and the Pennsylvania State Police are interested in speaking with anyone that has information on this case. Police want to hear from waiters or bartenders who worked at Buck Hill Falls Lodge during August-September of 1970.
