East Stroudsburg University’s Provost’s Colloquium Series, an intellectual experience that promotes dialogue among ESU faculty, staff, students, and community, continues during the Spring 2024 semester with a presentation by Andrew McIntosh, professor of sociology at Northampton Community College. “See How It Sounds, a Little Unrational”: The Edutainment Value of Hip Hop History, Culture, and Performance will take place on Wednesday, April 10, at 12:30 p.m. in Beers Lecture Hall. The presentation will also be live streamed on the ESU Live Events webpage.

Hip Hop music and culture is broadly receiving new appraisal and perspective during the celebration of its 50th anniversary in 2023 – 2024. This presentation by McIntosh will identify the origins of Hip Hop culture’s “four elements” and the socio-economic conditions of the Bronx, N.Y. in the 1970s from which they emerged. Further discussion will chart the development of the culture in the 1980s, 1990s and into the new millennium where Hip Hop becomes a ubiquitous pop culture phenomenon worldwide. While delving into a sociological analysis of Hip Hop culture, McIntosh will mix together the topics of pop culture phenomenon and late 20th century political, economic and criminal justice histories.
