Pocono Mountain School District (PMSD) has announced that it was informed of a cybersecurity breach involving its third-party vendor, PowerSchool, on January 8, 2025. PowerSchool, a widely used student information database provider serving over 18,000 school organizations across the United States, reported the breach and has launched a forensic audit to determine the extent of the damage.
At this time, PMSD officials have not confirmed whether any specific student data was accessed or compromised. However, PowerSchool has assured the district that measures are being taken to investigate the breach thoroughly.
PMSD officials emphasized that their student information system relies on student identification numbers, not Social Security numbers, which minimizes the potential for sensitive personal data exposure.
As part of its response, PowerSchool has committed to offering credit monitoring services to affected adults and identity protection services for minors if necessary. The district has promised to provide updates as more details emerge from PowerSchool’s forensic audit.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to remain vigilant and monitor any unusual activity related to their child’s or their own personal information.
