POLK TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local veterans shelter in Monroe County is answering the call to help victims of Hurricane Helene.

Residents and supporters of VALOR Clinic gathered supplies and other necessities at Paul's House to help people in North Carolina.

"What we are looking for is the items to help give them heat and the cooking ability. Anything that has to do with wood, fire, splitters," House Manager of Paul's House Erin Kelly said.

"I got an impassioned call from a supporter in fear for her safety going down with a medical team and it kind of changed my attitude about the whole thing. So I started calling some more affluent supporters and to see if we can put together a package to upgrade our vehicle fleet," said VALOR Clinic Founder and CEO Mark Baylis.

The first crew left Sunday morning and a second crew will be leaving Wednesday to join them.
