It’s that time of the year again. The wind blows cold, frost haunts your car’s windshield, and the National Honor Society’s (NHS) blood drive is in full swing!
Eligible students sign up to donate blood. Just one donation saves the lives of up to three people!
NHS, led by advisor, Ms. Maureen Verwey, hosts a blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross.
In order to have a successful blood drive, NHS members pitch in to help the Red Cross staff. Members help with paperwork, direct people where to go, bring in food to help donors recover afterward, and keep everything running smoothly in order to ease the workload on the phlebotomists.
“We have a lot of great people here to help get as much blood as possible,” said NHS President, Gunnar Gasper, 12. “Ultimately, what we are doing here is saving a lot of lives which is a very noble cause.”
Typically, these blood drives are done bi-annually so if you missed out on donating this time, don’t fret! Expect another drive to be held sometime in March this school year.
“I donated blood because I wanted to help save lives,” said Madison Reehl, 12. ” When I graduate I want to be a trauma nurse, so I feel like this is a good first step into helping people out.”
With over 40 people donating blood the blood drive was a big success! Every time slot available during the school day was filled and many had their names on the wait list hoping to donate as well.
