What is National Library Week?
National Library Week is an annual celebration that shines a light on the incredible role libraries, librarians, and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities.
It all started in 1954 when research showed that Americans were spending less on books and more on radios and TVs. The American Library Association (ALA) and the American Book Publishers responded by forming the National Book Committee to encourage more reading. In 1958, National Library Week was born with the theme “Wake Up and Read!” and has been celebrated annually ever since. This year marks the 66th anniversary of National Library Week!
