If you live in America, you already know and have probably eaten one of the most popular dishes. According to History Net, macaroni and cheese comes from France, yet finds itself as the main course on American plates through various holidays and get-togethers.

Macaroni and cheese was invented by Thomas Hemmings, an enslaved Frenchman to Thomas Jefferson. He was an accomplished chef who used his culinary skills to mix pasta with cheese and invented macaroni and cheese.

“Mac and cheese is a great food. I love it and it makes my heart happy,” expressed Cate Hoffman, ’26.

Once mac and cheese was brought to America, it developed into different recipes and types. Lobster mac and cheese, baked mac and cheese, and truffle mac and cheese are just a few of the plethoric amounts of mac and cheese recipes.

Mac and cheese also horned in on main entrees and appetizers, creating the mac burger which has heaps of velvety golden noodles on top of the burger, and mac and cheese bites which are deep-fried breaded mac and cheese balls boasting a crunchy outer layer and a gooey inner layer.

“I am always going to make mac and cheese as a meal if I don’t have any other ideas. It is a classic meal,” stated Sophie Best, ’26

Around Thanksgiving of 2024, a recipe went viral on TikTok. Tini’s mac and cheese was all over “For You” pages, with over 136 million views, it’s safe to say mac and cheese was being added to many plates for Thanksgiving dinners.
