TOBYHANNA, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Tobyhanna Army Depot honored those in the military who are prisoners of war or are missing in action Thursday.

Traditionally celebrated on the third Friday of September, the army depot held their event a week early.

28/22 New's very own Valerie Smock, who served in the Army National Guard and Air Force Reserve, was the featured speaker at the event held at the POW/MIA Memorial on the base.

"We always recognize our veterans through ceremonies like this because we never forget pow/mia is important every year we take a pause and we remember how important this country is and how great this country is without these veterans we would not be living in a place like we do now," said Event Organizer and Army Veteran Adam Chase.

They say it's important to raise awareness of those lost or captured so they know that they have not been forgotten.
