East Stroudsburg University senior Kathryn Pabon participated in The Washington Center’s (TWC) Career Launch Bootcamp, March 20-23 in Washington, D.C. The program is a four-day bootcamp designed to equip students with the strategies, content and connections needed to empower their job search. Pabon is graduating in May with a degree in communication and a minor in political science. The program is designed to give students exclusive insider access to Washington, D.C. where they can gain unparallel access to career professionals and industry experts in order to assist them with launching their careers.

This short but powerful experience is designed to provide maximum impact in minimal time. In just a few days, students gained the skills, network and confidence to launch their career. During the Bootcamp, students learned to craft a standout resume that captures employers’ attention, create an optimized LinkedIn profile that shows their unique skills, developed interview techniques to boost confidence and secure offers, learned effective networking and job application strategies, practiced negotiation skills, built a professional and peer network, and connected with students nationwide.

“One of the most valuable lessons I took away was how to tailor my resume for each job I apply for. Every position requires something different and learning how to highlight the most relevant skills and experiences made me feel much more confident in my applications,” Pabon said. “We also practiced interview techniques, which helped me become more comfortable talking about my strengths and experiences in a professional setting. The Bootcamp was all about identifying our own values as professionals. I spent time reflecting on what I bring to the table, both as a communicator and as someone who thrives in collaborative environments. Understanding how to leverage these strengths in the workplace is something I’ll carry with me throughout my career.

“Another eye-opening part of the experience was learning how to negotiate salaries and benefits. It’s not something we often talk about in the classroom, so practicing those conversations was incredibly empowering. I now have a much clearer understanding of how to advocate for myself when the time comes,” Pabon added.

The Bootcamp also provided a full site visit at Airbus, allowing a behind-the-scenes look at their operations. But, what really surprised Pabon was the opportunity to try the flight simulator. “On my first attempt, I managed to land the plane successfully! I never knew I might have a talent for flying. It was a fun and unexpected reminder to always be open to new experiences.”

Pabon, who received a full scholarship to participate in the program, joined peers from across the U.S. for an experience that combined learning and hands-on workshops as she worked and grew alongside others who shared her ambitions, building lasting friendships and a peer network.

After full days of learning and networking, the students had some free time to explore Washington, D.C. “I would recommend this experience to anyone,” Pabon said.
