The SHS Environmental Club, ran by AP environmental teacher David Hakim, has plans to help the school courtyards reach their full potential.
“It’s sad to see that we don’t use them because of how nice they are, so I’m hoping to renovate them and open them to in school use,” expressed Ann Alekseyev, 11, the club leader.
On Friday, May 24, the Environmental Club plans on re-homing plants they had been working with into one of the courtyards by the cafeteria.
The end goal is to make the courtyards more appealing to students, but Alekseyev hopes it could be more.
“I was hoping to have a specific time during lunch where students can go get fresh air because it feels like having a courtyard not only for seniors would do so much for the school,” Alekseyev explained.
Whether or not students will be allowed in the courtyards is still unknown. An outdoor eating area is a privilege that has been reserved for seniors since the courtyard was renovated, so it’s very likely that it will not be opened to underclassmen.
The idea was started by Alekseyev and she has taken charge to see her vision become reality.
“I feel like when I’m watching a show or movie there is usually a courtyard in the school,” she explained, “and this is the club that makes the most sense to make that happen.”
The future of this goal is still unknown, but we’re all excited to see what the Environmental Club will acomplish next year.
