Doechii

Florida’s Swamp Princess Doechii, whose real name is Jaylah Hickmon, is an American rapper and singer.

At the 67th Grammy Awards Doechii won her first Grammy.

Her album “Alligator Bites Never Heal” won Best Rap Album, making her the third woman to win this award since Lauryn Hill (1997) and Cardi B (2019).

She is also the first artist to win this award with a mixtape since its creation in 1989.

“She 100% deserved that award, her lyrical music speaks to a variety of people,” said Zaynah Wade, ‘27.

During her Grammy speech, she speaks out to black women and tells them anything is possible and shouldn’t listen to stereotypes society puts on them because they are already who they are and she is an example of that.

Doechii winning this award continues to pave the way for not only black artists but all artists.

She is best known for her “unique style, bold persona, and fearless experimentation” in her music. She started writing lyrics as a teenager as a way to express herself.  She found recognition through the social media platform SoundCloud. At 21 years old, she was building a fanbase, but her breakout moment came in 2020 with the song “Yucky, Blucky Fruitcake”. Suddenly, record labels took notice.

The success of Doechii and her popular rise in a short time shows how much effort she put into her music. She rightfully earned this award through her hard work, especially with being the third woman to win this award,”

According to Woke Waves, she was inspired by “artists like Nicki Minaj, Missy Elliott, and Erykah Badu, Doechii started creating music that combines sharp lyrics, genre-blending production, and a distinctive, unapologetic attitude.” Fun fact, she is a skilled artist.

Other artists have have earned recognition through social media platforms like SoundCloud or YouTube are Post Malone, Kygo, and Kehlani, just to name a few.
