Celebrating Winter's end in Monroe County with Pond Skim

POCONO TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Call it an end-of-winter celebration in the Poconos. Dozens of people put on their skis or snowboards on Saturday and took part in Camelback's Annual Pond Skim.

The ultimate goal was to avoid falling and making a splash while navigating a 90-foot-long stretch of water.

Celebrity judges like 28/22 News Reporter Sydney Kostus sat on lounge chairs and scored the snowboarders and skiers.

This year's theme was a throwback to the 1980s and many of the pond skimmers dressed for the part and, win or lose, aimed to have fun.

"I just like to get out here and try something a little different, a little more fun you know. I ski this mountain all the time, all year long so getting into the water instead of on the snow, that's great," said Pond Skim Participant from Tannersville Venin Lavelle.

"For snowboarders, it's kind of tricky because your body is parallel with the water. I mean, because you want to open up and face it but you can't. You'll go right in the water," Mount Pocono resident and Pond Skim Participant Jacob Transue explained.

Prizes were awarded for best skim, best costume, and best splash.

This year marked the 20th Annual Pond Skim at Camelback.
