
**Public Safety Announcement: Scam Alert: Fraudulent Phone Calls**
The Stroud Area Regional Police Department is warning the public about a recent scam involving fraudulent phone calls. Residents have reported receiving calls from an individual claiming to be a Police Officer/ Captain from the Stroud Area Regional Police Department.
- **Important:** The Stroud Area Regional Police Department does not make unsolicited calls requesting personal information, payments, financial information or make demands regarding payments of any kind. If you receive a call from someone claiming to be an Officer from SARPD or any other law enforcement official, do not provide any personal information or send money.
- **Red Flags:** * The caller claims to be a law enforcement officer, but the call is unsolicited. * The caller requests personal information, such as social security numbers or financial information. * The caller demands payment or threatens consequences if payment is not made.
- **Protect Yourself:** * Hang up immediately if you receive a suspicious call. * Do not provide any personal information or payment. * Verify the caller's identity by contacting the Stroud Area Regional Police Department directly at 570-421-6800 or calling 911 if you are within Monroe County.
- ***Criminal methods include “spoofing” phone numbers of local police departments, sheriff’s departments, or other legitimate organizations, including banks. Spoofing is the act of a criminal disguising phone numbers, email addresses, display names, text messages or websites to gain a potential victim’s confidence, get access to their computer systems or banking information and steal data and/or money. Often, these calls originate from outside of the United States.
- **Report Suspicious Calls:** If you have received a suspicious call, please report it to the Stroud Area Regional Police Department by calling the Monroe County 911 center at 570-992-9911.
