Weekly Programs

  • Chair Yoga (Mondays) Every Monday, 2:00pm (unless otherwise specified) — Community Room (March: No Monday class on 4/21)
    Join our chair yoga sessions, open to all skill levels. Please dress comfortably, bring water, and feel free to bring your own yoga mat. Space is limited to 50 participants, available on a first-come, first-served basis. 
  • Color Yourself Calm (Wednesdays) Every Wednesday, 12:30pm-3:00pm (drop-in) — Pullen Room.
  • Drop in for a self-guided coloring session where all ages and abilities are welcome. With provided materials and soothing music, you can relax, socialize, or enjoy some quiet time at your own pace. 
  • Tech Thursdays (Thursdays)
    • Library Resources for Genealogy Research — Thursday, 04/03/2025, 2pm — Discover the library’s resources and tools for tracing your family history. This class will cover databases, digital archives, and more to help you get started with genealogy research. Comfort with computer basics or smartphone/tablet required. Registration is required – space is limited. Call 570-421-0800 ext. 317 or stop by the Hughes Library’s Information Desk to register.
    • Intro to Microsoft Word — Thursday, 04/10/2025, 2pm — Learn the basics of Microsoft Word, including creating, editing, formatting, and saving documents. Comfort with computer basics or smartphone/tablet required. Registration is required – space is limited. Call 570-421-0800 ext. 317 or stop by the Hughes Library’s Information Desk to register.
    • Intro to Computers & the Internet — Thursday, 04/17/2025, 2pm — This class introduces basic computer and internet skills, including navigating web browsers, searching online, and understanding basic digital tools. No prior computer experience needed. Registration is required – space is limited. Call 570-421-0800 ext. 317 or stop by the Hughes Library’s Information Desk to register.
    • E-Books & eAudiobooks — Thursday, 04/24/2025, 2pm — Learn how to borrow and read e-books and listen to eAudiobooks from the library’s collection. This class will help you get comfortable with various devices and apps. Comfort with computer basics or smartphone/tablet required. Registration is required – space is limited. Call 570-421-0800 ext. 317 or stop by the Hughes Library’s Information Desk to register.
  • Chair Cardio/Movement (Fridays) Every Friday, 2:00pm (unless otherwise specified) — Community Room (No Friday classes on 4/11 and 4/18)

HUB Book Club
Tuesday, April 1st, 6:00pm — Pullen Room/ Zoom
This month’s selection of the Hughes United Book Club (HUB) is Jennifer Moorman’s The Magic All Around. An e-book copy of this title is available on Hoopla and print copies available to be placed on hold in our catalog. Creating a Hummingbird Haven: Guest Talk with Master Gardener
Thursday, April 3rd, 11:30am — Community Room
Learn from a Master Gardener how to attract hummingbirds and keep them returning year after year! Discover their feeding habits, top native plants, and expert tips for maintaining a hummingbird feeder. Registration helpful but not required. Call 570-421-0800 ext. 317.

Financial Education Series

Share a Dish, Swap a Recipe: April Appetizers

Bring a prepared dish to share and its recipe. Not a competition — just a fun way to explore new appetizer dishes! Sample recipes from featured cookbooks available at the Hughes Library information desk if you need inspiration. Registration required. Register by 04/01. Call 570-421-0800 ext. 317.

Health Booth: Volunteer for a Healthier You!
Friday, April 4th, 1pm-4pm (drop-in) – Hughes Lobby
This April, join us at a free health booth hosted by a representative from the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Learn about various ways to improve your health and well-being, discover resources for healthy living, and explore how volunteering can have a positive impact on both your life and your community. This is a fantastic opportunity to ask questions, gain valuable insights, and get inspired to make healthier choices. No appointments are required—just drop in and take the first step toward a healthier you!

Words & Film Free Movie Matinee: Conclave
Sunday, April 6th, 2:00pm — Community Room
Join us for a screening of Conclave, a thrilling 2024 political drama. Directed by Edward Berger and based on the 2016 novel by Robert Harris, the film follows Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) as he leads the secretive conclave to elect a new Pope, uncovering a conspiracy that threatens the Church. Rated PG for thematic material and smoking.

Texas Hold’Em Poker Learning Sessions
Mondays, April 7th thru May 5th, 1pm – 3pm – Eisemann Room
Join us for Texas Hold’Em Poker learning sessions led by Annette from TOALC! This class provides a fun and social environment to learn the basics of poker. Registration is highly recommended; walk-ins are allowed only if space permits. To register, call 570-421-0800 ext. 317. Chips and cards will be provided for each session. As the saying goes, “Minute to learn, lifetime to master”—and that’s exactly what you’ll experience with poker! Please note, no gambling or exchange of funds is permitted—this is purely a learning and social environment. For adults only, 18+.

Sit & Stitch
Monday, April 7th, 3:30pm-5pm – Community Room

Join us at Hughes Library for a creative crafting session where all crafts and skill levels are welcome! Bring your own supplies and enjoy a self-guided experience every 1st and 3rd Monday from 3:30pm to 5pm in the Community Room and on select Sundays from 1pm to 3:30pm in the Eisemann Room. While there is no formal instruction, you’ll find a supportive atmosphere with friendly crafters ready to chat and help. Drop in or stay for the whole time—everyone is welcome! (April Dates:  April 7th Only,  No Session 4/21, No Sunday Session)

Evening Chair Zumba® with Danny Grae
Tuesday, April 8th, 5:30pm – Community Room
Discover the joy of Chair Zumba® with Danny, a seated adaptation of the popular Zumba® dance fitness program, perfect for all fitness levels and abilities, including wheelchair users. Don’t worry – you’ll still break a sweat! Registration requested; walk-ins are welcome. Call 570-421-0800 ext. 317

Book Swap & Silent Reading Celebration for Adults
Friday, April 11th, 1pm-3pm – Eisemann Room
Join us for a fun-filled afternoon of book swapping and silent reading in the Pullen Room! Celebrate Drop Everything and Read Day a little early while discovering new books and sharing your own.

  • Book Swap (1:00 PM – 2:00 PM): Bring one book, take one book! Whether you’re looking for a new read or want to pass along a book, this is your chance to trade and connect with fellow book lovers. All books must be in good condition—nothing excessively worn or mildewy, please. Plus, every participant will receive a ticket for a small prize drawing to win book accessories like bookmarks, bookmark holders, and more!
  • Silent Reading (2:00 PM – 3:00 PM, or as long as you like): After the swap, stay and enjoy some quiet reading time! Relax in our library space with soft music playing in the background – a great atmosphere for reading. You’re welcome to bring a seat cushion to make yourself more comfortable. This is a bit like informal Silent Reading Book Clubs, though no discussions or commitments are required—just enjoy reading alongside others who love books!
  • Any leftover books will be donated to the Friends of Eastern Monroe Public Library. So, come swap, read, and celebrate the joy of books! For ages 14+. No registrations required, drop-in.

Free BookHouse Concert: Scott Besser (piano)
Friday, April 11th, 7pm, doors open 6:30pm – Community Room
Featuring pianist Scott Besser, performing a mix of classical and popular music. Refreshments can be purchased during the event, and donations are greatly appreciated.

Red Cross Blood Drive
Saturday, April 12th, 9:30am-2:30pm — Community Room
Join us for a vital blood drive hosted by the American Red Cross at Hughes Library. Both Power Red and Whole Blood donations will be accepted. Registration is required—call 1-800-RED CROSS or visit redcross.org/rapidpass to schedule your appointment and help save lives.

Free Weekday Matinee Film: The Visitor
Wednesday, April 16th, 2:00pm — Community Room
In recognition of Arab American Heritage Month, watch this poignant drama about a reserved professor who returns to his apartment to find a young immigrant couple living there. What begins as an uneasy encounter soon develops into an unexpected friendship, reshaping his views on life, identity, and belonging. Rated PG-13 for brief strong language.

Library Board Game Night 
Wednesday, April 16th, 4:00pm – 8:00pm — Eisemann Room
Join us for fun and games, meet new people, and bring your favorite tabletop games! (Or try ours!) Drop by anytime between 4pm and 8pm. Open to all, ages 14+. No experience required and all skill levels welcome.

Soil Testing Workshop with the Master Gardeners
Thursday, April 17th, 11:30am — Community Room
Get your garden off to a healthy start! Spring is the perfect time to test your soil, ensuring your plants get the nutrients they need for a thriving season. Learn why soil testing matters, how to do it, and how to interpret the results in this hands-on workshop with Penn State Extension Master Gardeners, Monroe County. Pocono Liars Club Writer’s Conference
Saturday, April 19th, 9am-4pm — Community Room
EMPL is happy to host a day-long writers workshop for beginning and professional writers organized by the Pocono Liars Club. Expert-led sessions on book covers, exposition, revision, and character depth, plus panels and critique opportunities. Register at www.poconoliars.com. Free but limited space!

Word Play Social
Tuesday, April 29th, 1:30pm- 4:00pm (drop in) — Pullen Room
Join us for a fun and social word game gathering every fourth Tuesday from 1:30pm to 4pm at Hughes Library. Whether you’re an experienced player or new to the games, drop in anytime during the event. Use one of the provided Scrabble, Bananagrams, and other word game boards, or bring your own favorite. It’s a self-guided, come-and-go event – stay for the whole time or just stop by for a bit. No registration required.
