Middle Smithfield Township Community and Cultural Center

5200 Milford Road, East Stroudsburg

During his program, local historian Jeffrey Wright will discuss where some of Monroe County's earliest people of color came from, having arrived in the area with the first settlers from Kingston, N.Y., about 1725. He will also discuss the Stroudsburg Little Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, an important historical landmark. Wright will share his findings from the 1780 Slave Register and report on the 1790 Census, which indicated that both enslaved people and free people of color were living in present-day Monroe County.

Jeffrey Wright received his Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 1969 from the University of Pittsburgh and his Juris Doctor degree in 1972 from Duquesne University School of Law. Mr. Wright attributes his love of history to his parents. As a child, family vacations included historic destinations throughout Pennsylvania and the U.S. Mr. Wright has been a volunteer with the Monroe County Historical Association since 1978 and has served a number of terms on the Board of Directors, including three terms as President of the Board.
